City Persian Rugs Nain

Nain is situated just north-east of Isfahan, in central Persia. Rug weaving is relatively recent to the city of Nain, with production starting in the late 1930s.

However, Nain has since developed a tradition of weaving amongst the finest of Persias rugs, with knot counts ranging from 320 to well over 800 knots per square inch. Nain rugs are usually woven on a cotton foundation, and with Nain rugs the fineness of the warp thread is related to the fineness of the weave. Hence, Nain rugs are often categorised according to the number of plies of cotton there are to the warp thread. So Nain rugs can have warp threads consisting of 9 plies (Narla), 6 plies (Shishla), or very rarely 4 plies (Charla) – the lower this number the finer the knot count.

Nain rugs are conservative in terms of design and colours - Nain has adopted a modern colour scheme of cream, ivory, blue, and beige, with practically no use of red. Key sections of the designs are often emphasized by silk tracery which gives these rugs an almost jewel-like effect.

Nain has been heavily influenced by the classical “Shah Abbas” designs of its neighbouring city of Isfahan, with a traditional formal medallion and border arrangement being the favoured format.
