City Persian Rugs Qum

The city of Qum is one of Persia's two holy cities, and here the mausoleum of Shah Abbas and the Tomb of Fatima is situated. Rug weaving is relatively recent to Qum, as production was established in the early 1900s by a group of merchants from Kashan. However, since then Qum has established itself as a source of the finest and highest quality of Persian rugs. Indeed the designs of Qum rugs are the most diverse of all origins with the designers of Qum adapting designs from elsewhere. Typical designs are: the Tree of Life, Panelled Garden (reminiscent of the Bakhtiar), Hunting Scenes, stylised Prayer Rugs and also the Traditional Medallion format.

Older examples were woven with a woollen pile usually onto a cotton base; however more recently production has been transformed with the manufacture of very fine silk rugs: with silk warp, weft and pile.
