This finely woven Russian Bokhara Dozar was made in the vicinity of Ashkabad; it has a thin, fine woollen pile knotted on a woollen warp and weft.
Nowadays the term "Russian Bokhara" is perhaps a somewhat out-of-date expression, but it is one that nevertheless persists in the Oriental Carpet trade. The phrase Russian Bokhara distinguishes the Turkoman product of Central Asia ( i.e. Turkmenistan) since the Russian expansion into the region (of the mid 1800s) from other Bokhara design rugs (notably from Pakistan, Afghanistan etc) and the Turkoman rugs of North East Iran.
