Hamadan Rugs

These Persian Rugs are sometimes referred to as Hamedan Rugs.

Hamadan is Persia’s most prolific rug weaving origin.

There are over 300 rug producing villages surrounding the city of Hamadan (or Ekbatan as it is sometimes known), and this is where these rugs are marketed.

Each village has its own distinctive pattern. The rugs from these villages are known simply as “Hamadan”. It is because of this diversity that there is such a wide range of designs produced.

Designs

The finer or more distinctive designs are known by their individual village names such as: Mehribhan, Hosseinabad, Nanaj, Nahavand, Tafrish, Lillihan, Rudbar and Tajabad to name just a few.

Usually geometric in design, these rugs are made in a variety of sizes such as small rugs, runners, and large carpets.

A Distinctive Weave

All Hamadan Rugs have a wool pile which is hand-knotted with symmetrical (or Turkish) knots onto cotton warps.

The Hamadan weave is distinctive: it consists of a single weft construction i.e. only one weft thread passes between each row of knots. The consequence of this is that these rugs are less ridged and are quicker to produce.

There are around 30,000 looms in this area. As this is Persia’s most prolific rug making region the result is the production is high.

As a consequence, Hamadan Rugs are amongst the most inexpensive of Persian rugs.

Happily, if carefully selected, the quality of Hamadan Rugs can be high. Hamadan Rugs are a hard-wearing quality and can last for generations. This is because they can have a relatively thick and durable woollen pile.
