Afghan Khan Mohamadi Rugs are hand-knotted rugs made in northern Afghanistan, in and around Andkhoy and Kunduz.
Most oriental rugs take the name of a place, style or tribe. Afghan Khan Mohamadi Rugs are named after a person, a man who developed this style of Afghan Rug. Afghan Khan Mohamadi Rugs are typically made by Ersari Turkoman weavers in northern Afghanistan.
Typically Khan Mohamadi Rugs have an all-over repeating design, although occasionally medallion style formats can be found.
The main background colour is usually a brown-red/coppery shade with secondary tones of blue-black. The pile consists of wool, which is often rather velvety to the touch, this wool pile is handknotted onto wool (sometimes) cotton warp threads.
