Title: Old Milas prayer rug

Size: 1.28×1.05m / 4’3″x3’5″ Thickness: 8mm

Origin: Milas, West Anatolia (Turkey).

Technique: Hand-knotted.

Material: Wool pile, wool warps & wefts.

Colours and Design: This appealing old Turkish Milas prayer rug has exquisite colours made from vegetable dyes. These colours are superb and include orangey-brown, gold, grey-green and cream colours. The design is geometric and asymmetrical. It takes the form of a prayer rug design – although you don’t have to pray on it! 

Condition/Age: This Turkish rug is in good useable condition with full pile, and was woven with excellent quality wool. It has a couple of small, slight imperfections to the pile (please see images 7, 8, & 9). Image 8 shows a couple of small spot stains. Like all of our vintage rugs, this rug has been washed and its ends secured. 
It dates from the last quarter of the Twentieth Century, so it’s around 30-40 years old.

Often these are either no longer made in these places, or the carpet weaving has evolved into a more market-reactive enterprise. To preserve them for their next custodian, we always expertly wash the rugs that we discover and where possible/or financially viable repair them.

These rugs often look “at home” in period properties (almost like they have always been there), but conversely can be a spectacular statement piece in an ultra modern setting.

We recommend using a rug underlay under these rugs if using on hard flooring or carpeted floor. We stock a variety of rug underlay options to suit most situations.

Milas rugs were woven in villages along the Aegean coast, south of Izmir.

These rugs are all wool and have a hand-knotted wool pile, wool warps, and wool wefts which are often dyed a rusty shade. The town of Milas is famous for its prayer rugs (Seccade) designs. 

The colours favoured are made in pale, delicate earthy shades of tobacco, dark and light brown, reddish-brown and tawny yellow.
