Title: Qashquli rug antique

Size: 1.86×1.32m / 6’1″x4’4″ Thickness: 4mm

Origin: Fars Province, South-West Persia

Technique: Hand-knotted. Double weft construction.

Material: Wool pile, knotted onto wool warps and wefts.

Colours and Design: This Qashquli rug has an attractive mature chestnut field colour with navy blue corners and beige main border.
The design shows a classy arrangement of boteh motifs. 

Condition/Age: It has low/worn pile (see images 5, 6, & 8). It has been washed and has had the ends secured leaving a short fringe. Circa 1900.
This rug is not suitable for use in areas of high footfall.

The Qashquli are a sub-section of the Qashqai tribe.

The Qashquli are a tribal people that have tradition of weaving rugs of some repute. Once nomadic, Qashquli rugs are woven in villages within the vicinity of Firuzabad, just south of Shiraz within the Fars province.

The production of Qashquli rugs is small, with weavers producing exceptionally fine quality Qashquli rugs in small sizes. These Qashquli rugs represent the finest rugs of the Fars province and even within the bazaar of Shiraz (Shiraz being the capital of the Fars) Qashquli rugs are extremely hard to find.

Qashquli rugs are finely knotted employing the Persian (asymmetrical) knot, sometimes on an ivory coloured woollen warp, although (these days) usually on a cotton warp. The designs favoured by the Qashquli are: Millefleurs, Herati, as well as other traditional geometric Fars designs.
