Title: Semi Antique Senneh rug

Size: 1.75×1.18m / 5’9″x3’11″ Thickness: varies between 5-6mm

Origin: Sanandaj, Kurdistan.

Technique: Hand-knotted. Single weft construction.

Material: Wool pile, cotton warp and weft.

Colours and Design: It has contrasting colours of plain faded pink with blue and blue-black as well as cream and green. This Senneh rug has a traditional geometric medallion design.

Condition/Age: It has low pile / wear all over (please see images 7 & 8). There is slight colour-run to outer guard stripes / narrow borders (see photos 6 & 9). It has been marginally reduced on one end and there is some reduced fringe on one corner. It has been washed and the ends secured. It was made 1960s/70s.

Senneh rugs are woven on a vertical loom with a woollen pile on a cotton warp and weft using exclusively the Turkish or Ghiordes (symmetrical) knot. 

There are two types of Senneh rugs. The old type Senneh was woven with a very distinctive single weft construction. These rugs have an extremely rough back to them almost rasp-like. The wefts on these rugs appear to be inconsistent/irregular; however the knotting is fine and close, whilst the pile is thin and short. In spite of this Sennehs are extremely hard wearing.

However, in recent years the weave of Sennehs has changed, and now Sennehs are more like Bidjars in construction. The back of modern Sennehs is smooth and the weave consistent, double wefted in construction and the pile is thick.
