Title: Turkoman Red Bokhara Carpet

Size: 3.60×2.34m / 11’10″x7’8″ (length measurement including Kilim end finishes is 3.71m/12’2″, but not including the fringes).
Thickness: 8mm

Origin: Vicinity of Ashkhabad, West Turkmenistan.

Technique: Hand-knotted.

Material: Wool pile, knotted onto wool warps & wool wefts.

Colours and Design: Red with touches of dark green, purple, orange and beige. Geometric all over pattern of 115 main Bokhara / Tekke guls.

Condition/Age: Full pile. 20-30 years old.

Additional Information:

Turkoman Rugs are distinctive for their all over repeating motifs which are known as “Guls”, which is Persian for flower. Typically this arrangement of Guls is laid upon a background that is a shade of red. This field pattern is surrounded by a border theme with additional end border patterns (skirt).

These Turkoman Rugs have a hand-knotted wool pile knotted onto a wool foundation (i.e. the fringes are made of wool). Traditionally between the pile and fringe areas there is often a band of flat-weave that is known as Kilim.

The patterns produced are ancient: traditional tribal emblems of the Tekke (aka. Bokhara), Yamoud, Saryk, etc. 

An old (and somewhat out-dated) trade term for this type of Bokhara Carpet is “Russian Bokhara”. This was from the Soviet era to differentiate between the Turkoman Bokhara Rugs of Turkmenistan from those Pakistan Bokhara Rugs, Afghan Bokhara Rugs and Persian Turkoman Rugs. A distinguishing feature of these Russian Bokhara Rugs is the use of green within the guls. Generally these Turkoman Bokhara Rugs are made in small sizes.
