Title: Unusual Turkoman Prayer Rug
Size: 1.40×0.97m / 4’7″x3’2″ Thickness: 7mm
Origin: Turkmen
Technique: Hand-knotted.
Material: Wool pile, knotted onto wool warps.
Colours and Design: This unusual Prayer rug has traditional rich colours of red, black, orange, green and cream. The design is geometric and in an asymmetrical format (like most prayer rugs)- the unusual shape takes the form of a mihrab at one end.
Condition/Age: Full pile. Approx 20 years old.
Additional Information:
Turkoman Carpets are hand-knotted onto horizontal looms. The pile is made of wool, warps either wool or cotton. The carpets are made in the home rather than a factory/workshop setting.
The designs of Turkoman Rugs feature all over, repeating ancient motifs known a guls (flower). These patterns are distinctive to Turkoman tribes – especially the Tekke and Yamoud tribes.
