Title: Antique Joshaghan rug 

Size: 1.68×0.97m / 5’6″x3’2″ Thickness: 6mm

Origin: Joshaghan, central Persia.

Technique: Hand-knotted.

Material: Wool pile, cotton warp and weft.

Colours and Design: It has a main colour of blue-black with plenty of variations of shade (aka abrash) along with terracotta, cream, gold and blue. Notice the corners are a deeper (royal) shade of blue at one end. This Persian Joshaghan rug has a traditional geometric medallion theme with field decorated with star/diamond flowers.

Condition/Age: It has areas of wear in places; please look at the pictures, particularly images 6, 7, and 8. The ends and sides are tidy, and it is clean and ready for use. It probably dates from around the 1930s. Perhaps consider using one of our excellent rug underlays with this piece.

The village of Joshaghan is located north of Isfahan in central Persia.

Joshaghan neighbours the village of Meymeh. These two villages produce rugs and carpets of similar designs. 

The design of Joshaghan (and Meymeh) Rugs is distinctive and ancient. The design consists of a field decorated with diamond shaped floral motifs often on a red background, although sometimes the background colour is blue or beige.

Joshaghan Rugs have a wool pile formed by hand-tied knots, knotted onto a cotton foundation (warp threads/fringes), whilst the weft threads are often dyed blue.
