Additional Information:
Afghan Silk & Wool Rugs are probably the finest type of Afghan Rug from Afghanistan.
The production is small and from Kabul. Classic Afghan patterns are produced as well as Caucasian designs, Persian designs and occasionally maps and pictorials.
The warp threads of these Afghan Rugs are made of silk – this silk is rather wiry to the touch. Silk makes an excellent warp thread: it has impressive tensile strength whilst its thin, fine nature allows for extra fine knotting. Often prestigious rugs will have silk warps/fringes. Sometimes these long silk fringes are left long, but can easily be reduced to the desired length. The weft threads are of wool. The hand-knotted pile is made from both wool and silk – often the main colour is silk whilst some of the coloured design consists of wool and silk.
Given the limited production of these rugs, as time goes by, part silk Afghan rugs of such high quality are likely to become increasingly scarce.
