Colours and Design: This Indian Nain carpet has a classic colour scheme. This consists of a main colour of cream with contrasting dark blue, fawn, green, and rust red. The design is an intricate medallion curvilinear design with a fine floral theme throughout.

Handmade in India this rug takes inspiration from Nain rugs. The city of Nain is located in central Iran and neighbours the great city of Isfahan.

Rug making is relatively recent to Nain, with the earliest Nain Rugs made around 1920. Prior to this time, the traditional industry of Nain was the production of fine woollen cloth for the Persian cloak or aba.  With the adoption of western dress, these skills were adapted to the production of fine rugs.

Thus, Nain began a production that was more finely knotted than any other weave of the time (with knot counts of approx 450kpsi). However, production was on a very small scale – but it was the start of a tradition of the making of  prestigious luxury rugs that would become renowned around the World.

The colour scheme of traditional Persian Nain Rugs is conservative with cooler colour combinations a speciality: such as creams with blue. These traditional colours and designs are inspired by the ancient tile-work architecture of Safavid Persia.  Sometimes other colour combinations are produced such as blue with cream border, red with cream, or green with cream, etc.

Nain Rugs have a hand-knotted wool pile. A distinguishing feature of Nain Rugs is that often the motifs are outlined in silk. The warp thread (fringes) used is typically cotton, although silk is sometimes used as a foundation with exceptional pieces. The fineness of the warp threads dictate the intricacy of the knotting, i.e. the thinner the warp threads the higher the knot density. This is graded in the amount of plies of thread to each warp or “La”; the lower the quantity of plies, the finer the rug. So, Charla (4-ply) is the finest and rarest, Shishla (6-ply) this quality is exceptional also, and Narla (9-ply).
