Technique: Handwoven. 

Material: Wool, woven onto wool warps.

Colours and Design: This old Afghan Kelim rug has superb, mature colours of cream, brown and grey. The design is geometric. 

Condition/Age: It is in good clean condition. It is in the region of 30 years old.

These Rugs are particularly interesting as they were made for the weavers own use rather than for commercial purposes. These are unique, one-of-a-kind tribal and village weavings. 

The small town of Qala-i-nau is located north of Herat.

Much of the population/weavers are Hazara Aimaq. The Kilims produced in Qala-i-nau are of a good quality. The traditional Kilim designs feature bands of pattern.

The Aimaq is a group of nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes that inhabit a vast region towards the north-west and west-central of Afghanistan.

This type of Kilim consists of wool and is a handmade flat-weave, i.e. a rug without pile.  The weft coloured weft threads are woven in blocks which creates the pattern, and where two colours meet there is a tiny gap – hence the term slit weave. Sometimes the weave (colours) might be interlocking, so there is no gap where the colours meet.

One of the many benefits of this type of kilim is that because of the way it is constructed it is the same on both sides, meaning that it can be used either way up.

For use on a hard floor (wood, tiles, etc) or on carpet Underlay is recommended to prevent slippage.
