Colours and Design: This Afghan fine Kunduz runner has classic colours of rich orangey-red, blue-black with cream, dark green and brown. It has a design of 4 gul motifs.

Afghan Kunduz Rugs are intricately hand-knotted rugs handmade in Kunduz and its surrounding villages in northern Afghanistan.

Afghan Kunduz Rugs are a finer quality than Afghan Khan Mohamadi Rugs. The knotting is typically fine, neat and consistent creating a smooth, velvety pile.

The pile is wool hand-knotted onto wool warps, occasionally cotton warp threads. One of the distinguishing features of Afghan Kunduz Rugs is finish of the band of flat weave (kilim) at each ends of the rug which is decorated in red and black squares.

Often the main colour of Afghan Kunduz Rugs is red, sometimes bright red occasionally the brown-red/coppery shade of Khan Mohamadi Rugs. From time to time a blue-black ground example is found.

The designs produced are generally all-over repeating patterns, typically ancient Turkoman designs such as Alma Gul (apple blossom), Baghi Shinar, Baba Saqal, Hatchlou (Purdah) to name a few, as well as superbly refined depictions of Khan Mohamadi patterns.
