Technique: Handwoven. Kilim of interlocking construction.
Material: Wool, and wool warps.
Colours and Design: This old Ghalmouri Kilim rug has mature shades of brown, orange, charcoal and blue. The design is geometric, and shows an all over theme.
Condition/Age: It is in good clean condition with subtle signs of age (see images 8 & 9). It dates from the mid Twentieth Century.

Ghalmouri Kilims are a traditional type of Afghan flat weave rug made with geometric designs. They have a characteristic colour scheme which is typically deep, rich and cosy. These colours are generally deep red, oranges, with blue and black tones.
Ghalmouri Kilims are great value and are a similar price point to Afghan Veg Dye Kilims. These Ghalmouris, however, tend to be finer in terms of weave.
This type of Kilim consists of wool and is a handmade flat-weave, i.e. a rug without pile. The weft coloured weft threads are woven in blocks which creates the pattern, and where two colours meet there is a tiny gap – hence the term slit weave. Sometimes the weave (colours) might be interlocking, so there is no gap where the colours meet.
One of the many benefits of this type of kilim is that because of the way it is constructed it is the same on both sides, meaning that it can be used either way up.
For use on a hard floor (wood, tiles, etc) or on carpet Underlay is recommended to prevent slippage.
