Additional Information:
This Memling gul carpet is from a very small production in Afghanistan.
The principle motif in this carpet is known as the “Memling” gul (aka. Lakharbi gul).
It is named after Hans Memling (1430-1494) a Fifteenth Century German painter, who sometimes painted rugs in his paintings (with this motif).
Rugs were depicted in paintings to represent the idea of opulence, exoticism, luxury, wealth, or status. Their use was for the most powerful (and most wealthy), for royalty and nobility.
In this Memling gul design carpet, the pile is hand-knotted, tied onto cotton warps and is made from hand-spun wool. The dyes are natural from vegetable dyes. It is a wonderful hard wearing quality that will stand the test of time.
